Eastern Airways Faces Collapse: UK Airline Files for Bankruptcy Protection

Велика авіакомпанія зазнала краху і розпочала процедуру банкрутства

British regional airline Eastern Airways, which carries around 1.3 million passengers annually, has filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators — the first step toward bankruptcy protection. The company, operating since 1997, serves routes across the UK including London Gatwick, Aberdeen, and Humberside.

The filing grants 10 days of creditor protection, allowing the airline to negotiate restructuring options or prepare for formal administration. If no rescue deal is reached, flights could be grounded within days.

Financial Crisis and Mounting Losses

Eastern Airways reported a net loss of €23 million for the year ending March 2024, with total liabilities exceeding €30 million. Profit dropped to less than a third of the previous year’s figures. Rising fuel prices, reduced post-pandemic demand, and fierce competition from low-cost carriers have all contributed to the company’s decline.

The airline had already discontinued several routes, including Birmingham–Gibraltar and Cardiff–Paris Orly, after struggling to maintain profitability. Its charter division, serving corporate and government clients, is also expected to be affected.

Impact on Passengers

If administrators take control, all scheduled flights are likely to be cancelled, leaving thousands of travelers stranded. Passengers are urged to:

  • check flight status directly with Eastern Airways or booking agents,

  • avoid heading to the airport without confirmation,

  • request refunds or compensation through insurers or credit card providers.

Aviation analysts note that the case mirrors the fate of other European regional airlines such as Flybe and Germanwings, highlighting ongoing financial strain in the short-haul aviation sector.
