“Dangerous and deadly” entertainment was banned for tourists in Hurghada

“Dangerous and deadly” entertainment in Hurghada was put an end to by the local leadership. We are talking about a complete ban on extreme riding on jet skis in this resort of the country. At the same time, it is not known when the new restrictions will apply to other popular Egyptian destinations.

As an ex-pat living in an Egyptian resort reports in her blog, the initiative was prepared by the Governor of the Red Sea Province, Amr Hanafi. “Although it has been developed since 2010, the ban should come into effect literally in a few days. Jet skis are planned to be banned “in various cities of the province as a precautionary measure to save the lives of citizens and tourists.” because they “lead to catastrophic accidents.” The Egyptian side considers them dangerous for everyone: both for tourists driving and for people who may meet at sea,” the author clarified.

“I have given instructions to all concerned authorities to quickly activate the solution and act decisively. As a measure of influence, a fine with the confiscation of this vehicle is envisaged, the Russian woman quoted the official as saying.

At the same time, the blogger emphasized the paradox of the authorities’ decision, since there were no jet skis on most of the beaches even before this decision – the exception was jet skis that ride “pills” and “bananas” – but they are not driven by bad tourists, but by locals. In addition, the technique did not appear in high-profile deadly adventures, unlike sharks, which periodically attack bathers. “But in general, Egyptians and extreme sports are not the best combinations,” she said.

What you need to pay attention to is the alarming statistics of accidents on Egyptian roads. According to expatka, only in the last month there have been 2 major road accidents. The first is near the non-tourist city of Sohag, which is in the south of the country. 17 people died there, involving a minibus and a truck. The second is on the road Oleksandria — Matruh: as a result of a collision with a truck, 44 passengers of a tourist bus were injured, and the driver died.

“Although according to reports, the number of road traffic fatalities in Egypt is decreasing, it is still high (more than 6,000 per year). The same applies to injuries on the roads. People are much more afraid of sharks, but the statistics are inexorable – the chance of becoming lunch for the heroine of the movie “Jaws” is much less than getting into a banal accident,” the author added.

Against this background, the fight against the few jet skis remains unclear. However, according to the author, this decision is unlikely to affect the popularity of recreation in Egypt, because such entertainment was not in high demand among tourists before.
