Car rental in Germany is getting more and more expensive. Car rental prices in Germany rose by 48.7% year on year in May 2022, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
In comparison, consumer prices as a whole rose by 7.9% over the same period.
Above-average car rental prices have been rising above average for some time: In particular, since May 2021, people who urgently need a car have to put up with double-digit car rental inflation in Germany.
There are many reasons for the significant price increases since mid-2021, such as many car rental providers reducing their fleets in the first coronation year.
Approximately 31,900 employees worked for approximately 4,400 German car rental companies in 2020. Their sales amounted to about 34.7 billion euros. In 2020, the average annual price growth for car rentals was 0.8%, slightly above the headline inflation rate of 0.5%.
