Beaches in Egypt were closed after a deadly shark attack

Several beaches in Egypt were closed after an Austrian woman died in a shark attack near the resort of Hurghada, Reuters reported concerning BTV.

A 68-year-old woman was swimming near the shores of the resort when she was attacked by a sea predator.

The victim was transferred to a local private hospital immediately after the attack, a source from the Red Sea Health Authority told Reuters. He added that resuscitation attempts were made, but she died.

A video shared online allegedly shows a woman being attacked by a Mako shark relatively close to shore. In the video, the water around the woman turns red with blood as passersby on the pier throw her a life jacket. It remains unclear how she managed to reach the shore, read the details in the DIP material “In Hurghada, in front of dozens of people, a shark tore apart a tourist (VIDEO)“.

The woman lived in Egypt with her Egyptian husband for the past five years.

All “marine activities,” including diving, snorkeling, and windsurfing, are banned, according to an internal document from the Red Sea province governor’s office provided to The Associated Press. Fishing vessels are also prohibited from being in the waters near Hurghada.
