Air traffic density worldwide approaches 2019 levels

Total aircraft departures increased by 28 percent over the year, with total seating up by 32 percent over the same period. Such data are given in the report of the International Civil Aviation Organization ICAO.

The latest ICAO analyzes show that passenger aircraft capacity and passenger traffic worldwide have already reached 80 percent of pre-pandemic levels. At the same time, commercial transportation revenues are about 72 percent of 2019 high.

The number of air passengers carried from January to August this year increased by about 55 percent compared to the same period in 2021.

The number of aircraft takeoffs and landings also increased by 28 percent, while the total capacity of the aircraft increased by 32 percent over the same period.

In the first eight months of 2022, airline revenue from passenger traffic remained at the level of 2019, and compared to the same period in 2021, an increase of 70 percent was achieved.

The number of passenger aircraft in active operation increased by 34 points compared to the same period last year. According to experts, this reflects the general trend towards the restoration of transportation – 80 percent of the level that existed before the pandemic.

Cargo aircraft, in terms of numbers, has not grown as much – the figure that existed before the pandemic is only 4 percent exceeded. This is largely due to their continued active use during COVID-19 to support medical, humanitarian, and other critical global supply chains, as well as consumers’ increased dependence on international e-commerce.

ICAO currently forecasts that most international routes should be fully restored to pre-pandemic levels by either the fourth quarter of this year or the first quarter of 2023. The East and Central Asia segments will lag and recovery there will follow later in 2023.

At the end of September, ICAO will host 193 countries at its 41st Assembly. It will make new decisions on key goals in the field of innovation and digitalization of air transport in the 21st century.
