Flights between Russia and Egypt’s Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh will resume on August 9, 2021, the Russian embassy in Cairo said on Friday.
“From August 9, there will be five flights a week from Moscow to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh. A further decision to increase the number of flights to these destinations, including from other cities of our country, will be made following the visit of the Russian delegation to Egypt to assess the epidemiological situation, “the statement reads.
During a telephone conversation in April, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Vladimir Putin agreed to completely resume flights between the two countries, especially to the coastal cities of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh, after a six-year hiatus in these tourist destinations.
Flights between the two countries were suspended in late October 2015 after a bomb blast shot down a Russian plane carrying holidaymakers from the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, killing all 224 people on board. mostly Russian tourists. The Islamic State terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
In January 2018, Russia decided to resume flights to Egypt’s Cairo International Airport after Egypt introduced new, tougher security measures at all its airports to meet Russia’s requirements for resumption of flights.
