Russia manipulates the global GPS navigation system during major military maneuvers over Finland

Russia is accused of trying to manipulate the global GPS navigation system during major military maneuvers over Finland, writes the Daily Mail.

The European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has announced that the signal used by all civilian flights has been transmitted from Finland across the Black and Mediterranean Seas as far as Iraq.

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) outages, including GPS, are caused by jamming and duplication of satellite signals.

“This is happening around conflict zones in Ukraine and elsewhere,” EASA said in a statement.

The most serious problems are associated with the Russian enclave in Kaliningrad, the Baltic Sea, eastern Finland, the Black Sea, the eastern Mediterranean and northern Iraq.

“Effects have been detected by many aircraft at different stages of flight. This led to a change in schedule, even a change in destination and the inability to make a safe landing, ”the statement said.

However, at the moment there is no reason to suspend flights. EASA has asked all of its contractors to report abnormal GPS behavior and warns that other navigation may need to be used if satellite problems persist.
