“Today Ukraine is fighting not only for its independence and freedom, today it is fighting for the freedom of all of Europe,” Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in the Seimas. As he stressed, “Russian barbarism must meet with a resolute rebuff from the entire free world.”
Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, in his speech to the Sejm, said that February 24, 2022 will go down in history as the day when Russia chose war. Like the day when one country attacked another for no reason.
“Ukraine is fighting for the freedom of all Europe”
– Today is a very special moment in our history, because this morning has changed everything, – said the head of government. “He forced the demons we had already forgotten, the demons of the Second World War, to revive again,” the prime minister stressed, referring to Russia’s attack on Ukraine.
– Attack, aggression have become a fact. People are dying just beyond our eastern border,” Morawiecki said. “This barbarism that we face on our eastern frontier must be resolutely rebuffed by the entire free world,” the prime minister stressed.
“Today Ukraine is fighting not only for its independence, today Ukraine is fighting not only for its freedom, today Ukraine is fighting on behalf of all of Europe for the freedom of all of Europe,” he said.
He recalled that the Russian threat is clearly visible from our point of view, but until recently it was not visible to Europe.
“Today, Europe speaks more and more Polish, understands these threats better, ends up with a naive look at Russia, which led to a kind of consent to acts of aggression,” the prime minister reasoned.
“Poland is part of the most powerful military alliance in the world, Poland is part of NATO and at the same time is a member state that informs people about the risks associated with this situation,” the prime minister said. As he stressed, “today these risks are fully recognized and properly assessed by all our partners in NATO.”
We need a package of tough sanctions
According to him, it is necessary to develop “the most far-reaching sanctions against the Russian Federation.” “Only they are capable of resisting further acts of aggression,” he stressed.
The Prime Minister emphasized that “our actions, the actions of Europe and the free world, go in two directions.”
– Firstly, the implementation of the most stringent, resolute package of sanctions imposed against the Russian Federation. Such a package that will effectively deter people from further action and give hope for the restoration of the full territorial integrity of Ukraine and its independence, the head of government said.
Prime Minister Morawiecki said Thursday’s conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel – “about sanctions, about strengthening the defense of the eastern part of the EU” – was “very good, very positive.”
– There is a complete understanding. After the last few days, (…) after that package of sanctions, which was very mild, today we understand that we must lead to decisive actions, because only such actions will stop the barbaric actions of the Kremlin, the barbaric attack of the Kremlin, Morawiecki stressed.
