Hackers used Facebook to attack public figures in Ukraine

Meta Platforms said the hacker group used Facebook to attack several public figures in Ukraine, including prominent members of the armed forces, politicians and journalists, according to Reuters.

In today’s blog post, Meta attributed this to a group known as Ghostwriter, which, according to the company, managed to access target profiles on social networks. Meta added that hackers tried to download videos from these accounts on YouTube depicting the Ukrainian army weakened, including a video allegedly showing Ukrainian soldiers coming out of the woods waving a white flag as a sign of capitulation.

Meta added that in the last 48 hours, it has deleted about 40 fake accounts, groups and Facebook and Instagram pages run by Russia and Ukraine, and attacked people in Ukraine.

A Twitter spokesman said the social network had also blocked more than a dozen profiles, as well as several links for violating the platform’s rules. The company added that its investigation showed that these accounts were from Russia and were trying to undermine the public debate on the conflict in Ukraine.

On Friday, Ukrainian cybersecurity officials said hackers from neighboring Belarus had attacked the personal emails of Ukrainian servicemen.
