Tourists after visiting India can expect mental health problems

Travelers in India may experience changes in their psyche. This conclusion was reached by French psychologist Regis Hérault. His words are quoted by The Guardian.

In 1985, the doctor went to work in Mumbai, where he often had to deal with travelers.

“When they came to India, they were completely normal, but a month later I saw that their condition was completely unstable,” said the doctor.

At first, Ero attributed the changes to drug addiction, but then he noticed that many tourists were depressed against the background of disorientation in an unfamiliar country and culture. Sometimes travelers were diagnosed with acute psychosis.

The doctor later described the condition as an “Indian syndrome” and tried to answer questions about its root causes. According to the expert, India strongly stimulates the imagination and awakens a whole range of strong emotions.

However, the syndrome is not officially a disease. However, many insurance companies include cancellation clauses in their contracts if a tourist traveling to India has mental health problems or drug experience.

In addition, some foreign embassies and consulates have full-time psychiatrists who come to the aid of their citizens.
