The correct posture during sleep can cause discomfort and contribute to the development of dangerous diseases in the long term, somologist-neurologist Elena Tsareva warned. She indicated which positions of the body should be avoided.
People often get used to sleeping in the same position, but sometimes this is unhealthy. For example, lying on your side is most medically beneficial, but pressure on the left side of the body can have an adverse effect on a person with heart disease, and such people are better off lying on their right side, Tsareva said.
“The side position is more physiological and preferable during sleep. This position is the fastest way to eliminate metabolic waste. In principle, you can sleep on your left or right side, the chest protects you equally from both. for people with heart problems such as cardiopulmonary failure,” explains the neurologist.
Sleeping on your back is not suitable for those who have respiratory attacks in their sleep. If you suffer from snoring, lying on your back is also undesirable.
The doctor said that sleeping on your stomach is the worst thing. In particular, if a person is in this position for a long time, his spine suffers.
“The spine is not in a physiological position: some muscles are too stretched, others are overstretched, and this can lead to pain in the neck and head in the morning,” Tsareva explained.
But the most dangerous thing is that the habit of sleeping on your stomach can disrupt the metabolic processes in the body.
“Studies show that in the stomach area, the release of harmful metabolic products that accumulate during the day and are released at night – demyelinating diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, stops,” Tsareva explained.
