The newspaper El Pais writes that in the Spanish Autonomous Community of Castile-la-Mancha, for the first time since 1979, a case of cholera infection was detected.
Authorities sealed off a farm in the province of Toledo after a case of cholera from drinking tap water. The infection infected a minor resident of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, she was hospitalized.
Scientists are trying to find out the source of infection, understand if there are others infected, and assess the risks to the population. Presumably, the water was taken from a well on the farm.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, this case may be the first autochthonous (independent of external factors) case of cholera infection in the country since 1979.
