Romanian Health Minister Alexandre Rafil said that the pharmaceutical company Antibiotic Iasi is starting to produce 2.5 million tablets of potassium iodide every 48 hours, noting that the required amount is a maximum of 30 million tablets, according to Agence France-Presse.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Nikolai Chuka said the government had contacted local companies to ensure the emergency production of iodine tablets.
“There are currently a few iodine tablets, but not enough,” he said. He added that there is no increase in radiation at the moment, but the government is taking all precautionary measures in case of such a situation.
Health Minister Oleksandr Rafila noted that potassium iodide is not a “universal panacea” and is not taken prophylactically, but only on prescription and for a limited period of time.
