On April 30, 2021, the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Seimas, Richards Kols, opened the Honorary Consulate of Latvia in Slovyansk, Donetsk Region. Alexander Pavenko has been appointed Honorary Consul of Latvia.
Opening the Honorary Consulate, Richards Coles:
- stressed that the opening of the consulate is a sign of Latvia’s support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity;
- noted that Latvia wants to develop relations with the Donetsk region in the field of education, economy and other areas;
- stressed that the Honorary Consulate will also serve as an information point, which provides information on the educational, tourist and economic potential of Latvia and opportunities for cooperation with the Donetsk region;
- expressed satisfaction with the useless support of Ukraine by the Mayor of Ogre Egils Helmanis, who since 2014 has provided assistance in the purchase and delivery of more than 400 tons of humanitarian aid in Latvia to the population of Donetsk and Luhansk regions.
The opening of the honorary consulate was also attended by the leadership of the Donetsk region and the city of Slovyansk, representatives of several cities of the Donetsk region, as well as foreign diplomats accredited in Ukraine.
