A boat carrying illegal migrants sank on Wednesday morning off the coast of Lampedusa Island in southern Italy.
According to the ANSA agency, there were people from African countries in the boat.
The tragic incident took place 5 miles from the Italian island.
Rescuers managed to rescue 48 people, nine are missing.
The bodies of seven people were taken out of the water.
In recent months, 660 illegal migrants have arrived on the shores of Lampedusa from northern Africa.
