In an unfamiliar country or a new region, tourists are not always treated hospitably. Some hotels deliberately deceive their guests to earn more money from them. Be vigilant and don’t let yourself be deceived.
Fine for broken furniture
When leaving the hotel, the tourist may be fined for broken and damaged furniture. At the same time, it can be an insignificant element, for example, a vase that no one ever touches or a scratch on the bedside table. The hotel relies on the fact that when leaving, the tourist does not have additional time for disassembly, therefore, to get rid of them, they pay and leave. It’s worth going and double-checking the broken furniture because that way you have a chance to save some money. You can also look at the price of the same piece of furniture on the Internet and compare it with what is required of you or look at the rules of the hotel, where the procedure for paying for damaged furniture is written.
It is best to check all pieces of furniture upon arrival at the hotel and immediately report this to the administration. So you protect yourself from such cases and deception.
Unfavorable exchange rate
Hotels often accept a currency that is not considered official in this country, but the exchange rate will be extremely unfavorable. For example, you want to pay for a cocktail at a bar in a Turkish hotel with dollars. You are first transferred the amount for payment in dollars at the most unfavorable rate, and then they give you a change in Turkish lira, converting the currency at the most unfavorable rate. If you want to pay in this way, it is better to first find out at what rate the currency will be converted.
Also, do not change the currency in exchange offices at hotels, it is better to go to the city and find one where the exchange rate is more favorable.
Room deposit
The hotel may charge you double the room rate at the time of booking. The administration can explain this by saying that they took a deposit from you. When you leave, they don’t immediately return it to you, but they say that the money has already been returned, it’s just that they haven’t been credited to your account. Upon returning home, you can wait quite a long time, but the money will never be returned to you. As a result, this deposit may not be returned to the tourist at all or partially returned, referring to the fact that you took something from the mini-bar or ruined furniture. It is impossible to prove anything, so the money remains with the scammers.
There are several ways to avoid this situation: pay in cash, then the deposit will be returned immediately, or ask for documents on the return of the deposit to your account.
