In Germany, a unique hotel was made from a women’s prison

German architecture firm Grüntuch Ernst Architects has transformed an abandoned women’s prison and courthouse into a stylish hotel.

The hotel, called Wilmina, is located in the prestigious Charlottenburg district of Berlin and occupies two 19th-century buildings that had previously been abandoned for two decades.

“Wilmina is a place of natural calm, relaxation, and comfort, an oasis in the city center. The unique location and detailed, thoughtful transformation make the “forgotten place” a special place in Berlin,” says Grüntuch Ernst Architects.

The hotel has 44 rooms, which are located in a five-story U-shaped block of former prison cells, a penthouse, a terrace, a library, a bar, a spa, and a gym. Several narrow windows have been enlarged to give visitors a view of the main courtyard, but the prison bars have been retained to remind of the building’s history.

The cost of living at the Wilmina Hotel starts from 126 euros per night.
