Hotels in Spain suspend the sale of rooms for tourists

The Spanish resort island of Mallorca has issued a warning to tourists: local hotels will be forced to suspend room sales for the next few weeks.

Hotel chains are overloaded with bookings, say Spaniards. The mass flow of tourists is mainly generated by tourists from the EU and the UK, as a result of which popular hotels already exceed 85% occupancy. Getting on the “stop”, they want to redirect excess bookings to less popular hotels, although they are also quite busy. And hotels due to such high demand are expected to raise prices and increase fees.

“Hotels in Mallorca’s main resorts will stop selling over the next few weeks due to high tourist demand. This stop aims to avoid occupancy problems and encourage tourists to head to hotels with lower occupancy than expected,” the local newspaper Ultimahora said. es.

And, according to the publication, hotels are filled with organized tourists – tour operators TUI, FTI, DER Touristik, Alltours, Schauinsland, Jet2 Holidays and EasyJet Holidays agree that all their booking records in Mallorca have already been broken, despite competition from Greece, Croatia, and Turkey. Unorganized tourists are also not far behind. As a result, the hotel chains of the island “have been overwhelmed by an avalanche of bookings both through tour operators and online since the end of May.”

The number of passengers and aircraft in June exceeded the results achieved in the forecast year 2019, according to local media. Among tourists, where the tourist flow has grown, the French and Italians predominate, and the British are also growing.

As a result, Spanish experts predict that the summer figures of 2022 will be very similar to those of 2019. Moreover, they may even exceed pre-pandemic levels if last-minute bookings are just as in demand.
