A priest was attacked with a knife in a church in Nice, southern France, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter.
He said the priest’s life was out of danger, adding that the police had arrested the perpetrator.
A Catholic nun was injured while trying to protect a priest, according to local MP Eric Ciotti.
The alleged assailant was identified as a 31-year-old French citizen who had not previously been registered with the police. Authorities believe he may be suffering from bipolar disorder.
He told police he intended to kill President Emmanuel Macron, but instead focused on attacking a church.
