Ambassador to the European Union Andrzej Sadosz, at a meeting with representatives of member states in Brussels, presented Poland’s position on granting Ukraine the status of a candidate member of the EU as soon as possible.
The correspondent of the Polish Radio in Brussels Beata Plometska told about the meeting with the EU diplomats. According to their reports, the Polish ambassador to the European Union called for speeding up the procedures. He argued that Ukraine’s application for membership in the Union deserved prompt consideration, and asked the European Commission to mobilize forces and streamline the entire process.
According to procedures, EU countries must first obtain the Commission’s opinion before deciding whether to grant candidate status to any country. As a standard, its preparation takes one and a half years.
Proof of approval
Poland believes that in the current situation and in the face of Russian aggression, Ukraine cannot wait that long. According to one of the diplomats, Ambassador Andrzej Sados emphasized that Ukraine is paying the highest price for its multi-year elections and that granting it candidate status as soon as possible would be proof of the Union’s support.
The Polish ambassador called for a strong signal from the European Council from Paris later this week.
