European Commission: Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia ready to join Schengen

The European Commission announced the readiness of Bulgaria, Romania, and Croatia to join the Schengen area, and recommended that the Council of the EU approve this decision.

As European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Ylva Johansson said at a press conference in Brussels, over the years after joining the EU, these countries have fulfilled all the conditions for joining the European visa-free area.

Recall that Bulgaria and Romania joined the European Union in 2007, and Croatia in 2013.

The European Commissioner also noted that the actions of these countries “contributed to strengthening the security of the Schengen area, in particular during the COVID-19 pandemic.”

The proposal for the entry of the three countries is to be considered by the EU Council in December. The Netherlands actively opposes the entry of Bulgaria and Romania into the Schengen, pointing to the high level of corruption and organized crime in these countries.
