The Provisional Government of Bulgaria has confirmed the decision of former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov to introduce the euro as the official currency from January 1, 2024. The relevant national plan will now be submitted to the public.
The introduction of the euro is planned without a transition period, and the date of adoption of the euro will coincide with its introduction as the official unit of payment. The conversion will be carried out using a non-refundable fixed exchange rate between the euro and the lev. And after the introduction of the euro, both the lion and the euro will remain legal tender for a month.
Bulgaria’s commitment to adopt the single European currency was reaffirmed in the Treaty of Accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the European Union.
