Two people were killed and six were injured in a collision between a freight train and a bus near the city of Helwan, South Cairo, the health ministry said in a statement Monday night.
However, other local Arabic-language media reported that four people were killed and 24 others were injured.
A ministry spokesman said in a statement that 16 ambulances had been sent to the crash site to transport the wounded and dead to Helwan General Hospital and El Nasr Hospital, noting that the injuries were minor and ranged from fractures to bruises.
Egypt’s National Railways has confirmed that a freight train collided with two minibuses that stopped too close to the railroad tracks in a residential area near Helwan.
The train collision on Monday occurred between Cairo Tbin and Helwan in a place where there were no railway crossings, authorities said.
Train driver Helwan pressed the brake pedal but was unable to stop the train before it hit one van and crashed into another, he added.
Meanwhile, Attorney General Hamad El Sava ordered an investigation into the incident.
