Educational tourism is gaining momentum in Germany again. This conclusion follows from the data of the first educational search platform Erudera, which is supported by artificial intelligence. According to statistics, the number of international students increased by four percent during the winter semester of 2021/2022, reaching a peak of 27,400 students. At the same time, Ukrainian students took only 11th place in the tributary.
According to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), international students, including those attending one course or module in a particular country, have shown more interest in the issue this year than a year earlier. However, despite a 4% surge – 1,096 students – the number of foreign students fell by 26% compared to the dock level when 37,200 students came to Germany.
The total number of foreign students in Germany is 416,437, of which 324,729, or 78%, are foreign students and 91,708 are local students. In addition, the data showed that from 2014 to 2021 the number of foreign students increased by 38.1%.
The main markets for educational tourism in Germany
China and India are the main sources of students in Germany. In the eleventh place in Ukraine – on its account, 6,572 students went to a European country to study during this period.
Thus, the 13 leading countries in the number of students in Germany are:
- China – 40,122 people.
- India – 28,542 people.
- Syria – 16,931 people.
- Austria – 13,612 people.
- Russia – 10,573 people.
- Iran – 10,561 people.
- Turkey – 10018 people.
- Italy – 8576 people.
- Cameroon – 7970 people.
- Tunisia – 6729 people.
- Ukraine – 6,572 people.
- France – 6532 people.
- United States – 4,755 people.
The most popular program in Germany is engineering, which has 136,579 students. The second most popular field – law, economics, and social services – is registered with 79,416 students. Third and fourth places – mathematics, natural sciences, and humanities, 33,341 and 28,700 foreign students, respectively, while the number of foreign students receiving an academic degree in art and art history reached 13,110. The faculties of agriculture, forestry, dietetics, and veterinary medicine have registered 5,441 foreign students in Germany, while other fields of study number 1,910 students.
On the other hand, almost 138,000 German students study abroad. 30,231 students registered in Austria, 22,439 in the Netherlands, and 14,145 students in the United Kingdom. Next are Switzerland (11,536), the United States (9,242), and China (8,079). Other host countries with the largest number of German students include France with 4,715 students, Turkey (4,022), Hungary (3,447), and Denmark (2,980).
