Xi’an, China, with 13 million inhabitants, quarantined amid COVID-19 outbreak

In China, on December 22, the city of Xi’an, with more than 13 million inhabitants, was quarantined due to a new outbreak of COVID-19.

Since December 9, 143 cases of coronavirus infection have been officially confirmed in Xi’an.

The lockdown is very tough: once every two days, only one person from the family can leave the house to buy groceries and essential goods.

Residents are prohibited from leaving the city limits, exceptions are made only for those who need to leave due to emergency circumstances – the reason must be documented, after which a special travel permit can be obtained.

In Xi’an, bus stations have been closed, checkpoints have been installed on the roads to the city. Most flights from the local airport have been canceled.

Most of the city’s enterprises do not work, many companies and institutions have transferred their employees to a remote mode of work.

Bars, gyms and cinemas have been closed in Xi’an since last weekend.

According to the BBC, the Chinese authorities adhere to a strict strategy of zero infection with coronavirus, for this they use mass testing and lockdowns.
