In connection with the desecration of Soviet monuments in Sofia, Russia calls on the Bulgarian leadership to take measures to protect the monuments, said Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, according to TARS.
She noted that against the background of anti-Russian hysteria provoked by the West, a wave of desecration of Soviet military monuments swept through Sofia. “A monument to the Soviet Army and a mass grave in the Lozenets district have become the object of new vandal attacks,” Zakharova said.
“We are deeply outraged by the mockery of the memory of Soviet soldiers who gave their lives to save Europe from Nazism. The competent Bulgarian authorities need to conduct a full investigation and bring to justice those involved in these atrocities. on strengthening monuments in accordance with the existing bilateral legal framework,” Zakharova said in a comment.
“A smart, civilized approach must prevail,” said a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman. “The political situation cannot be an excuse to encroach on the monuments of the common history of our countries, our fraternal peoples.”
